December 8, 2011
By
U.S. flags in Michigan will be lowered Friday to honor a 20-year-old soldier from northern Michigan who was killed in Afghanistan. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday issued the order to honor Army Pvt. 2nd Class Jackie L. Diener II of Boyne City, who was based at Fort Drum, N.Y. A funeral service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City. The Pentagon says Diener died Nov. 21 in Kandahar province after insurgents attacked his unit with small arms. Diener was part of the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. The governor’s office says Diener joined the Army this year and had been deployed since September.
