The Port Huron Fire Department has received a $729,000 U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters grant. It is expected that the grant will be used to purchase a new ladder truck, to replace a 1985 model that is used as a reserve unit. Once the new truck is purchased, the older vehicle will be decommissioned and sold, allowing for a 1995 model ladder truck to become the reserve unit. Once the 1995 model is put in reserve status, it will be moved from the Central Station on River St., it will be housed at the Sanborn St. station, or the 24th St. station. According to Fire Chief Bob Eick, the new truck could cost as much as $810,000. The money has to be spent and the equipment in the city within a year of the grant being awarded. The additional money will come from funds already approved in the public improvements budget.
