Port Huron Township Water Rates Going Up

December 22, 2011
By

Port Huron township voted to increase their water rates by 6% beginning in January.  The vote took place at their regular meeting Monday night.  According to reports township residents pay an average of $31 per quarter, which will increase to about $33.  The increase came about as Port Huron voted earlier this year to increase water rate.  Port Huron, Kimball, Fort Gratiot, and Clyde townships all purchase water from the city of Port Huron.  The city raised its rates because it had been subsidizing its water fund out of other city funds. Failing to raise the rates would most likely see interest raised on city bonds, costing the more in the long run.   Fort Gratiot approved a 6% increase on Dec. 7 in the commodity charge to its residents for water. That increase will be seen on bills beginning in January. Kimball Township’s rate increase went into effect in October.  At this point, Clyde township is continuing to absorb the increase without passing it on to residents.
