St. Clair County Community College will offer two upcoming firefighter academies on the college’s Port Huron campus. An evening/weekend fire academy will run from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday from March 6 to Sept. 15. A daytime program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday from March 12 to May 18. A prerequisite to the academy is successfully completing a firefighter agility test conducted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the college. SC4 will accept certain fire agility tests from another college as long as the test was taken within one year of Feb. 11. The student must provide a certificate of successful completion to SC4. The academy includes instruction for Fire Fighter I certification, Fire Fighter II certification, live burn interior firefighting, hazardous materials awareness and operational level state of Michigan certification training. Self-contained breathing apparatus rental (if needed) is available. Turnout gear, meeting current standards, also is required. Rental options will be made available. To register for the agility test and academy, call training coordinator Kevin Powers at (810) 989-5740 or call (810) 989-5788. A packet will be sent to all interested candidates with additional academy information.
