Residents Ask For A Vote Before County Applies To Become Part Of A State Logistic Hub

February 1, 2012
By
In December Dan Casey, executive director of the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County, asked seven communities to band together with other nearby municipalities and apply to the state to become one of Michigan’s five logistics hubs.  County Commissioners voted December 7th to move forward with the application.  The public had 45 days from that time to call for a referendum allowing for a vote of the people as to whether or not they wanted to apply.  Jay DeBoyer,  St. Clair County clerk, told WGRT, petitions needed to be submitted by January 21 with somewhere in the neighborhood of 4300 to 4400 signatures.  Petitions entitled “Help Keep Us Free by– the Ballot Question Committee”  were turned in with well over the necessary signatures.  DeBoyer says the clerk’s office is working to validate the signatures and if the required number is met, the issue will go to a vote of the people.
