Local Lawyer Announces Candidacy For Judge

Fort Gratiot resident and Port Huron Attorney Michael L. West has announced his candidacy for judge presiding over the 31st Circuit Court in St. Clair County.  A series of campaign kickoff “Meet the Candidate” receptions are scheduled across the county throughout February.  This week a reception will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15 at the Port Huron Yacht Club.  The citizens of St. Clair County are invited to attend.   West has been a practicing attorney for more than 29 years and has argued cases in all levels of the Michigan court system, including in the Michigan Supreme Court.  West has also argued cases in the United States District Court and United States Court of Appeals.  ”I believe my experience as both a circuit court mediator, and as an attorney handling a wide variety of circuit court cases over the past 29 years, has given me invaluable experience viewing the court from all sides,” he said.  “Additionally, my experience at the appellate level, which is the higher levels of the state court system, has provided me with unique legal experiences after the circuit court process is concluded.”  Michael West attended St. Clair County Community College for two years and later received his bachelor’s degree in business from Western State College of Colorado, where he graduated Magna cum Laude.  West is a member of the American Bar Association and is a member of the criminal law and family law sections of the State Bar of Michigan.  Community involvement is not new to the candidate.  He is a member and Past Commodore of the Port Huron Yacht Club; is a member and Past Master of Smiths Creek Masonic Lodge #491; is a member of the Port Huron High Twelve Club; is a member of the Blue Water Sportsman Association and the 4 Square Sportsman Association; is a member of Pheasants Forever; is a member of the Blue Water Musicians Network; is a member of the Port Huron Eagles Arie #3702; is a member of William E. Lewis Lodge FOP #129, is a member of the St. Clair County Irish American Club; is a member of the Algonac, Marine City and Blue Water Area chambers of commerce; and is advisory legal counsel to Blue Water Habitat for Humanity.  West and his wife, Kimberley reside in Fort Gratiot.  West has two grown sons and two grandchildren.  West is an avid sailor, snowmobiler, sportsman and a long-time guitar and fiddler player.
