Gerald Frendt, chairman of the St. Clair County Republican Party, died last evening of an apparent heart attack. Off-duty St. Clair County Sheriff Department deputies and a physician from the audience performed CPR and used a defibrillator in an attempt to resuscitate him. The 65-year old Frendt was taken to Port Huron Hospital where he later died. Frendt had been a major participant in circulating a resolution to St. Clair County municipalities asking the commissioners to consider a referendum on a proposed $9 million bond to build a convention center in Port Huron. WGRT commentator Cliff Schrader states that Frendt “was very active in the local politics, and he understood this community. It is a terrible loss,” he says. Frendt was the owner/broker of Coldwell Banker Real Estate, 2379 Military St., in Port Huron where he worked with his wife, Lorraine.
