The Empty Bowl Event is set for March 22 – and this year someone will walk away with a beautiful work of art in the form of a quilt and pillows. The Empty Bowl is local soup kitchen Mid City Nutrition’s major fundraiser and it is held in the gymnasium at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Port Huron Township. At the event, people receive a locally crafted handmade bowl provided by potters. The empty bowl is meant to remind attendees of hunger in the community. Those at the event eat a simple, although delicious dinner of a bread bowl, filled with soup, and a cookie. Alice Rieves, director of Mid City Nutrition, says the soup kitchen plans to raffle the donated quilt and two matching pillows by selling $1 tickets and packages of six tickets for $5. According to reports, the fundraiser raised more than $12,000 last year.
