Port Huron City Council Votes to Buy Out-of-State

Brian Moeller

At Port Huron City Council’s meeting Monday night a recommendation was made to accept the bid of K. A. Steel Chemical, Inc., in the annual estimated amount of $142,000.00 for estimated annual consumption of 200,000 gallons of sodium hypochlorite for use at the Water Filtration Plant and the Wastewater Treatment Plant.  A Michigan company had bid slightly higher and  Council Member Moeller and Council Member Harris felt the money should go to a Michigan company rather than a company out of state.  Council member Moeller asked to have the bids put back out there for the Michigan company to be able to get this. He knows the Charter requires them to take the highest bid, but, he stated, that if they didn’t vote on it, the issue dies and the city administration can rebid it.  Council decided to vote, with Moeller and Harris voting no, all others voted yes.  Council member Moeller told WGRT he is disappointed that the council would not consider buying local.
