Both Sides of the Story

April 20, 2012
By

A few months ago I received a call from a local citizen, who happens to be a long-time friend, concerned about the legislative direction Senator Phil Pavlov was moving in the area of education.  This person was excited about the idea of a recall and wanted to make sure that WGRT would give it fair coverage.  It should also be noted that Phil Pavlov is a friend of mine.  This speaks to a problem we sometimes face in the media.  How do we cover stories fairly and honestly when the people we are supposed to be reporting on are friends?  In this case, we did interview the people behind the recall and we provided an opportunity for them to tell their story.  However, it is not uncommon for people to feel that their side of any story does not get fair coverage in the media.  Sometimes the powers that be feel we give too much coverage to people opposed to their ideas.  Sometimes the people opposed to proposals of those in power feel like we do not adequately tell their side of story.  We owe it to the public to make sure that those in power, those spending tax dollars, and those making public policy do not escape scrutiny just because of who they are.  If you think we don’t, let us know!
