Members of Port Huron City Council met again last evening to work on the proposed budget for 2012-2013. Port Huron Director of Finance John Ogden has proposed a 6.5% increase in city water and wastewater fees, along with a 1% administration fee to the city’s property tax bills to generate the funds needed to add two police officers to the city’s force which he says would allow for more hours devoted to the county’s combined Drug Task Force, as well as allow for more overtime pay for detectives and road patrol. If implemented, the administration fee is expected to raise $290,000 in the coming year. Mayor Pauline Repp says no clear decision has been made, however, while this would represent an increase in taxes, most residents will realize a reduction in the amount of money they will be paying, as property values have continued to head downward, thus, they will not be paying as much in property taxes. Next city council meeting is Monday, May 14 – next budget meeting is set for Wednesday, May 16.
