Announcement On New Bridge May Be Made Tomorrow

Governor Rick Snyder

Friday morning, officials from Michigan and Canada will get together at Cobo Center  to announce a  joint agreement on a new bridge across the Detroit River. Gov. Rick Snyder, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, members of Michigan’s congressional delegation and local business leaders including William Ford and Roger Penske are among those expected to attend.  Reports say the deal would be structured as an interlocal agreement, avoiding a battle among lawmakers in Lansing, and Michigan would not be required to make major financial contributions to the project.  Under the terms of the deal, Canada would cover Michigan’s $550 million portion of the $1.5 billion project.   The new span has been opposed by Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel “Matty” Moroun who has stated it would steal up to 75 percent of the traffic that uses his bridge.
