Swimming Accident Takes Life Of Six-Year-Old

Sheriff Tim Donnellon

A six year old girl drowned Saturday afternoon in the pond at Kimball Township Park on Howard Road west of Allen Road.  According to St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon, Emily Jo Beery-Rush of Port Huron was swimming with a large group of children in the pond during a family gathering.  Emily’s mother, and another adult were in the water.  Another child apparently had slipped and fallen and began crying.  He was taken to shore.  Once he was out of the water, a head count was taken and it was discovered Emily was missing.  A 911 call was placed at about 5:15 p.m. Kimball Township Fire and Rescue was called to the scene.  During that time, Emily’s stepfather,  located Emily underwater and pulled her to shore.  Tri-Hospital EMS was on location and worked on trying to revive Emily as they transported her to Port Huron St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.  However, they were unsuccessful and Emily was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:18 p.m.   Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.  At this time, it appears to be accidental drowning.
