Fort Gratiot Has Options
Quality drinking water is on every Americans mind. Bottled water sales are in the billions of dollars. People care about what they consume and breathe.
As we have known for years, the cancer rate in this area is the highest in the state. We’re told not to eat too much fish from the river. Detroit is planning to close their water plants that draw from the Detroit River. Sarnia located their water plant north of the Blue Water Bridge. Why?
The city of Detroit has a huge water plant located on 500 acres in Fort Gratiot Township. They also have a new director and board of directors who want new customers and want to offer more competitive prices. Because the Detroit plant draws water from a line extending five miles into the lake and does not draw from the lake bed, the water quality is “world class”. The city of Port Huron draws water from two 36 inch intake pipes from the river bottom. While water from both plants fall into the acceptable range, for drinking purposes, the Lake Huron water is clearly superior. Fort Gratiot residents are in a unique position of having a choice. As for me, I want the best available. So I will continue my negotiations and investigation.
My research may be upsetting to Port Huron city officials but I feel I’m doing the right thing by checking into viable alternatives for the citizens of Fort Gratiot Township.
