Wilderness Skills Being Taught

August 14, 2012
By

An expert in the outdoors will be at the Pine River Nature Center in August to teach “Wilderness Skills 101.”  Jamie Burleigh of Great Lakes Bushcraft will be at the center Friday, Aug. 17. His class is from 10:30 a.m. to noon. He will show how to make fire without matches, and how to weave cordage. One of the oldest ways of fire making is fire by friction by using the bow and drill technique. Hands-on fire starting for the class will involve using flint and steel. Cordage weaving will be taught using an age-old finger weaving technique. Plant fibers will be woven to make useful cords and turned into wearable artwork using beads and trinkets.   This wilderness skills class is geared toward young people in grades 6 through 9. This class is limited to 30 students. Cost is $13 per child.  Aug. 10.  To register, call the nature center at (810) 364-5477
