Michigan Woman Dies From West Nile Virus

August 17, 2012
By
A Washtenaw woman described as “healthy and active” has died of West Nile Virus, marking the first death in Michigan this year.  According to reports, this week, the number of reported cases in Michigan, 19 of which involved hospitalization, moved up to 24, which marks one of the worst West Nile seasons in many years.  At least 693 cases, including 26 deaths, were reported through Tuesday to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nationally.  The virus was first confirmed in mosquitoes in Saginaw County and in a wild turkey in Washtenaw County by mid-summer, which is earlier than usual.  Public health officials  remind residents to use insect repellent at dusk and dawn, when most mosquitoes are busiest, and make sure screens are secure.  Though most people experience no symptoms if infected, about 20% may get a fever, aches, nausea and swollen lymph glands or skin rash
