A record weight of pills were collected this past Saturday as the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office participated once again participated in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Drug Take Back Day. According to St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon, 101 pounds of pills were collected at the Port Huron Township Office and the Ira Township Substation. “It is gratifying to see the community respond to the opportunity to dispose of expired and unwanted medication,” said Sheriff Donnellon. “This program helps not only getting rid of those pills, but keeps them out of the wrong hands and also out of our water supply.” The last Drug Take Back Day saw over 35 pounds of pills collected by the Sheriff’s Office. During the five Drug Take Back Days that the Sheriff’s Office has participated in, 240 pounds of pills have been collected. Numbers aren’t in nationwide as yet; however, during the last campaign, more than 188 tons of pills were collected at over 5300 sites.
