Chicken Pox Outbreak

October 19, 2012
By

There has been an outbreak  of chicken pox in Yale Public Schools.  According to the St. Clair County Health Department, there have been 13 confirmed cases of chicken pox at Yale Junior High School.  The department has directed the district to exclude students who have not been vaccinated or do not have proof from a doctor that they have had the disease.  Ten percent of the student population were excluded at first notification, however as of yesterday between 15 and 20 students have already returned to the classroom, and it is expected that another 15 to 20 will return soon.  School officials believe that less than a dozen students will need to remain out of school, and they are currently working with parents to ensure the students continue with their lessons and homework.  The school custodians work at disinfecting common surfaces nightly to help reduce potential for addition cases.  The Health Department has advised parents to seek medical attention if their child exhibits symptoms and they may call the health department at 810-987-5300 for more information
