Border Patrol Saves Man From Jumping

November 16, 2012
By

On Saturday, November 10, a male subject attempted suicide by jumping off the MacArthur Bridge, which links Belle Isle Park to Detroit, Michigan. Detroit Station Border Patrol Agents and Detroit Police Department responded to the incident and together they were able to pull him to safety before he jumped into the water. Around 8:30 P.M. Detroit Police reported a suicidal subject on the MacArthur Bridge over the Detroit River. The first agent to arrive at the scene observed an adult male subject hanging over the side of the bridge. The subject appeared to be extremely upset, and claimed that he wanted to kill himself because of the unfortunate and difficult relationships with his wife and family. The Border Patrol Agent attempted to calm the subject down as other agents arrived at the scene along with two officers from the Detroit Police Department.  After a few minutes, as the agent spoke with the subject, the other six agents and officers approached the male without being noticed, grabbed him and pulled him over the railing to safety. Detroit Police took custody of the individual and transported him to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. No further details are available.  “Thanks to the courage and quick thinking of the Border Patrol Agents and Police Officers, as well as their willingness to place the safety of the general public above their own, a life was saved. Rescues like this are an example of the Border Patrol’s commitment to partnership with local law enforcement on the Northern Border,” according to Larry Belotti, Deputy Chief Patrol Agent of Detroit Sector.
