A celebration of the newly restored North American Indian wigwam at the Pine River Nature
Center was held Tuesday, Nov. 20. The wigwam is part of a small village typical of those built
and used by Great Lakes Indians 300 years ago. The nature center village was built in the
native style six years ago. Local volunteer John Kennedy, who is of Indian heritage, repaired
the wigwam. He has been coming to the nature center for several years to walk the trails and
meditate. He noticed the disrepair of the wigwam and volunteered to help replace the majority
of the saplings as well as re-tie all the natural fibers with wire so that the wigwam will last
longer. He rearranged some of the cedar bark and sprayed the outside with water
sealant. The invitation-only event will include a feast with traditional Indian food prepared by
John. For more information about the Indian village, call the nature center at 364-5477. The
nature center is at 2585 Castor Road, Goodells, adjacent to the Goodells County Park.
