Pavlov: Freedom To Work Is The Right Move For Michigan

December 17, 2012

Senator Phil Pavlov

Governor Rick Snyder last week signed into law Freedom to Work legislation that would allow Michigan workers to choose whether or not to join a union in both the private and public sectors.  “This is a simple matter of fairness and workplace equality, and it’s the right thing to do for Michigan workers,” said Sen. Phil Pavlov, R-St. Clair Twp. “It gives us chance to attract new job providers and new opportunities to our state. We’ve balanced the budget, streamlined our tax system, and now giving hard working Michiganders the choice whether or not to join a union is the next right move.”  Michigan will become the 24th state to pass Freedom to Work legislation. Indiana became the 23rd state in August. Since that time, more than 70 businesses have told Indiana officials that the Freedom to Work law will factor into their decision on where to locate projects.  According to an analysis of data form the Bureau of Economic Analysis and Bureau of Labor Statistics, Freedom to Work states have higher average wage increases and greater growth in total employment than non-Freedom to Work states.
