Alicia Sanchez 65, was the first Hispanic woman elected as mayor of a Michigan city; that city was Port Huron, where she served from 1991 to 1993. Along with being mayor of Port Huron, Sanchez also was a minority advocate in southwest Detroit, in various roles with the New Detroit Coalition, Latino Family Services Inc. and the Michigan Metro Girl Scout Council. She was 13 when she moved to the United States with her mother from Mexico City. A visitation will be held Thursday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place during the visitation at 7 pm.
