U.S. Representative Candice Miller announced yesterday that she will be appointed Vice Chair of the full House Committee on Homeland Security, and will continue to serve as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security for the 113th Congress. Miller has served as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security since January 2011. Miller said: “I have proudly served on the House Committee on Homeland Security for the past five years because I believe that the federal government’s first and foremost responsibility is to provide for our national defense, and our common defense begins with a secure homeland. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Committee as we continue the important work of overseeing the Department charged with protecting the American people. “As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, I will continue my oversight and legislative efforts to ensure our nation’s borders are adequately secured against illegal immigration, drug and human smuggling, as well as the exploitation of the legitimate visa process. During my tenure as Chairman, I have conducted effective oversight that has forced positive change to our nation’s security. I will continue to push needed legislation that will ensure we implement strong protections to our borders and global supply chain. Our nation’s borders can and must be secured, and my goal will be to see that the Department is making progress in this area vital to our national security. “I understand the serious security challenges our nation faces, and as Vice Chair of the Committee I will work with the Chairman and other members of the Committee to confront the threats of terrorism, cyber security, and mismanagement of the Department of Homeland Security. I look forward to continuing our work towards a secure border and a safer homeland.” Miller has served on the House Committee on Homeland Security since 2008. In addition for the 113th Congress, Miller has been appointed the Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, the only woman chairman serving in the House of Representatives. Miller also serves on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
