“A Matter Of Balance” For Seniors

January 14, 2013
By

The fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. Seniors with this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many seniors also may experience an increased feeling of isolation and depression from limiting interactions with family and friends.  To help area seniors improve their quality of life and remain independent, St. Joseph Mercy is pleased to offer “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls.” Offered in partnership with the Area Agency on Aging 1-B, the program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels.   Through this eight week program, participants will learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, simple exercises to improve strength and balance, and how to change their environment to reduce fall risk factors.  Beginning March 11, 2013, the eight-session program will be held Mondays, from 1 to 3 p.m., in the lower-level Auditorium at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, 2601 Electric Avenue in Port Huron. “A Matter of Balance” costs $10 and includes a workbook and light refreshments. The fee is due at the first session. Upon completion of the program, $5 will be refunded to participants.  For more information and to register for “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls”, call 1-888-MERCYME (1-888-637-2963).
