For twelve years now, the first Friday in March, WGRT and The Times Herald along with E&A Credit Union offer the blue water community “Women’s Expo”, held at the Birchwood Mall in Fort Gratiot. Thousands of women come out to see and talk with a variety of businesses and vendors to receive samples, advice and information aimed at women in our area. This was the largest expo to date with over 40 businesses represented. Also, each year, one lucky attendee wins $1,000. This year’s winner was Betty Boyd, who was excited at the prospect of winning, but said she wanted to pass that excitement on to a local charity. Betty chose St. Martin’s Lutheran Church’s Mid-City Nutrition. Mid-City Nutrition is located at 805 Chestnut St. and is the only full-time soup kitchen in the county. Last year, the soup kitchen served about 1,265 individuals 53,000 meals. Alice Rieves, executive director of Mid City Nutrition, met Betty at WGRT to receive the check. She says the money will go to good use. Lunch is served at the soup kitchen from 11 a.m. to noon Monday through Saturday, and a light dinner is served from 4-5 p.m. Sunday through Friday.
