Rep. Miller: While the White House Cancels their Public Tours D.C. Visitors May Tour The Capitol Instead

Congresswoman Candice Miller

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10), Chairman of the Committee on House Administration,  made the following comments regarding the White House’s decision to cancel all public tours citing the federal spending budget cuts, known as the sequester.  Miller said:  “For many Americans a family or school trip to our nation’s Capitol is a once in a lifetime event.  Since my arrival in Congress I have made every effort to make certain that my constituents are given tours of our Capitol Building that enhance their experience because this is the people’s House.  It is indeed unfortunate that the Obama Administration has decided to cancel all White House public tours beginning this Saturday, March 9th until further notice because of budget cuts.  “While President Obama is the current occupant of the White House, that house belongs to the American People.  I believe closing the doors of the White House to the American people is wrong.  I want to let those Americans planning a trip to Washington, D.C. know that the Capitol will remain open and encourage those wishing to visit to contact their member of Congress or the Capitol Visitors Center to schedule a tour.  My office will continue to give those who I serve, the constituents of Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, a full and complete tour of their Capitol Building regardless of any reductions in our office budget.”
