A vote that is expected to take place next Monday, April 22 at the Port Huron Area School Board of Education budget workshop, may see the closing of Lakeport Elementary at the end of this school year. Superintendent H. Ronald Wollen announced the plans at a meeting this past Monday. This closing will be the last based on a facilities study that was completed in 2008. Reports say that closing Lakeport will save the district more than $725,000. Enrollment has seen a decline beginning in 2001. Jefferson Adult Learning Center and Sparlingville Elementary School closed at the end of the 2008-09 school year. McKinley Elementary School, Grant Education Center and Chippewa Middle School were closed after the 2009-10 school year. Wollen also stated that the administration building, at 1925 Lapeer Ave., will be for sale, with staff moving into other district buildings. Board members also voted to put two vacant pieces of land up for sale. Some 48 acres at Keewahdin and Campbell roads in Fort Gratiot and about 50 acres adjacent to Indian Woods Elementary School at Lapeer and Allen roads.
