Port Huron Area School District Board of Education will receive a transition update on the plans for closing Lakeport Elementary School at their 7 p.m. meeting tonight at the McKinley Building, 2720 Riverside Drive. Reports say the board is expected to receive a timeline of the closing as well as plans for open houses for students to get acclimated to their new schools. The decision to close the building at the end of this school year came at the April 22 meeting in a 6-1 vote. The board says they expect the district to save about $740,000 by the closing. Enrollment has seen a steady decline over the past several years, and it is expected that the decline would continue. Students from Lakeport will attend Thomas Edison and Keewahdin elementary schools. An open for former staff, students and community members has been planned for 6 to 8 p.m. on June 7.
