The USCGS Bramble will be opening to the public during a special ceremony at 1 p.m. this Friday at the Seaway Terminal Bean Dock. It will be the first public viewing of the vessel since it was purchased in January of this year by Robert Klingler of Marine City. The opening will feature a short, military style ceremony with an American Legion color guard, rifle detail and Taps. At dock since 2003, the ship is awaiting a Coast Guard hull inspection before being rated seaworthy. Once the ship passes hull inspection, work is expected, to return the ship to operation. Klingler says he would like to sail it to a War of 1812 reenactment. First commissioned during WWII, the Bramble saw combat in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. From 1998-2003 it operated in the Great Lakes tending buoys and conducting search and rescue, ice-breaking and occasional ferry missions. It was decommissioned in 2003.
