In response to the American Red Cross’ emergency request for blood and platelet donations, the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a critical summer blood drive at the Port Huron Donor Center, 815 Pine Street (Pine St/7th St) on Tuesday, August 6 and Thursday, August 8, with appointment times now being scheduled between 1 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. each day. To schedule an appointment by phone, call (800) 733-2767, or online at www.redcrossblood.org. The entire community is urged to participate. The American Red Cross is currently experiencing blood and platelet donation levels that are much lower than expected. The trend is significant enough that the Red Cross is issuing an emergency request for donors with all blood types to make an appointment to give now, especially O negative, A negative and B negative and platelet donors. Donations through the Red Cross were down approximately 10 percent in June, resulting in about 50,000 fewer donations than anticipated. Every day, the Red Cross must collect almost 17,000 pints of blood for patients at nearly 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion.
