A 31-year-old Port Huron man charged in two homicides will be in court today for a preliminary examination in front of Judge Cynthia Platzer. According to reports, Senior Assistant Prosecutor Melissa Keyes said Manuel Gamez’s lawyer has filed the notice of an insanity defense. Gamez is charged in the July 29 murders of 26 year-old Melissa Ichenberg and 29 year old Daniel McRoberts. Gamez faces charges of two counts of open murder, two counts of torture and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Police have stated that Ichenberg was strangled to death. McRoberts was stabbed more than 50 times. A notice requesting Gamez be evaluated for competency to stand trial has been filed with the case.
