The St. Clair County Suicide Prevention Committee, a workgroup of the St. Clair County Community Services Coordinating Body (CSCB), will host the Out of the Darkness Walk for suicide prevention at East China Township Park this Sunday, October 13, 2013. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the walk begins at 12 p.m. The park is located on the southwest corner of M-29 and Recor Road. The intent of the Out of the Darkness Walk for suicide prevention is to provide support for people who have lost a loved one to suicide as well as to address the stigma associated with suicide. In 2005, the State of Michigan issued its Suicide Prevention Plan. The state challenged Community Collaboratives to examine local suicide data and develop a county-based plan to promote community awareness in an effort to reduce the number of suicides. The St. Clair County CSCB accepted the challenge and established a formal workgroup to work on this issue. The St. Clair County Suicide Prevention Committee collects local statistics when a suicide occurs, analyzes community resources related to prevention, intervention, and postvention (support for survivors), and makes recommendations on ways to develop and expand community awareness and suicide prevention activities. The Out of the Darkness Walk serves as a fundraiser, educational event, and support effort for the St. Clair County Suicide Prevention Committee.
