The Port Huron City Council meets tonight for the regular meeting and public hearings to hear comments on a Brownfield Plan to renovate the top stories of the Ben’s furniture building on Huron Avenue between Grand River and McMorran Boulevard, into lofts. The Witt family has purchased the building and plan to construct 11 lofts on the second and third stories, leaving the first floor to remain as retail space. The Brownfield plans will allow for a tax breaks for renovations to building restorations. The Witts currently have some 26 lofts in the downtown. Council will also look at a personal property tax exemption for longtime manufacturer, Mueller Brass. Mueller’s currently employees about 250 works, and the company is asking for a six-year personal property tax abatement. They say the company plans to make $18.5 million in investments by the end of 2014. Council will meet at 7:00 p.m. at the Municipal Office Building.
