Shirley M. Tomlin, 86 of Marysville, passed away at Blue Water Hospice Home on Saturday, April 28, 2012 surrounded by her family. She was born to Robert and Oleta Millne on October 17, 1925 in Port Huron, and was a life-long area resident. She attended the Port Huron schools graduating from Port Huron High School in 1943 and Port Huron Jr. College in 1945. In 1947, she married Mervin E. Tomlin.
Shirley loved her family and many friends. She enjoyed playing golf, bridge, bowling, and boating. She also enjoyed music, and loved to play the piano. Over the years, Shirley and Mervin were active members of the Port Huron Yacht Club and various local dance clubs.
Years ago, Shirley was active with the Garfield PTA and the Michigan Waterways Girl Scout Council where she served as a girl scout leader and a Camp Council board member. She was a long-time member and past president of Port Huron Town Hall, a long-time member of Port Huron Golf Club and past president of the Women’s Association, and a past board member & 25 year volunteer with the Port Huron Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a life-long member of First Congregational Church, and a long-time member of Port Huron Garden Club, Port Huron Musicale, & the International Symphony Association.
Shirley is survived by her three children, Cynthia A. (Edward) Shumaker, Mervin E. “Skip” Tomlin Jr., and David R. (Denise) Tomlin; and four grandchildren, Edward J. Shumaker IV, Christopher B. Shumaker, Natalie (Raul Pena) Tomlin, and Ted Tomlin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin, who passed away August 13, 2009.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. A service in Shirley’s memory will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home preceded by one hour of visitation. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery.

William E. Kellaway, age 78 of Marysville died Sunday, April 29, 2012 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born September 13, 1933 in Brocton, Massachusetts to Raymond and Doris Kellaway. He has lived in Marysville for the past 15 years. Bill received his Master of Education Degree from Wayne State University. He taught school in the St. Clair Shores Lakeview School District from 1968 until 1980. He also worked for Ben’s Furniture, Schwann’s and Sears. In his spare time Bill was an aviation enthusiast.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Cindy Kellaway, 2 children, Rene Shepard of Port Huron, and Bill Kellaway of Carlsbad, California, 2 step-children, Shelly Lonsby of Port Huron, and Ron Hartzell of Marysville and many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Colleen Kellaway, and a brother, David C. Kellaway.

William D. Schwalbe, age 86 of Port Huron and Clarkston, died unexpectedly of natural causes on April 29, 2012. Bill was a bachelor who loved sports, and rarely missed a Big Reds or Huskies football game. He was a graduate of Port Huron High School and Port Huron Junior College, and the Universities of Michigan and Nebraska. A World War II veteran, he was a member of the U.S. Army’s 24th Cavalry Squadron. He worked for GM’s Pontiac Motors Division for 38 years. Bill was a member of both Grace Episcopal Church Port Huron and All Saints Episcopal Church in Pontiac.
He is survived by his 1st cousins Janet Thayer, and William Webb, and several other cousins and friends. A funeral service will take place at 1 PM Friday in Grace Episcopal Church with The Rev. Robert Trask officiating. A graveside committal service will follow in Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 PM at the Smith Family Funeral Home – South, 1230 7th Street. James E. Ovick, age 65 of Port Huron Twp. died May 1, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Detroit after a long illness. He was born April 25, 1947 in Rush City, Minnesota to Ervin and Margie Ovick, and lived in the St. Clair County area for the past 38 years. He married Judith on November 1, 1969 in Flint.
He served his country during the Vietnam War in the 82nd Airborne Medical dust off detachment. Jim worked as a die setter for Emhart Black and Decker for 29 years, and after retiring, worked for a security company at Detroit Edison. He enjoyed being a Little League coach, and baseball, softball, and football umpire. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Judith A. Ovick, 4 children, Charles (Tracey) Reynolds, Michelle (Jeff) Lee, Dawn (Justin) Woodcock, and Jamie (Brian) Jones, 12 grandchildren, Corin, Alanna, Kirstyn, Joseph, Brooke, Walker, Gabrielle, Taylor, Hunter, Amber, Olivia, and Bailey, a sister, Sue (Paul) Knapinski, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, John Gregson, a sister, Mary Ellen Gregson, and a son, George E. Ovick.

Dorris A. Tangney, age 52, God’s special earthly angel, went home to be with her heavenly Father on May 4, 2012. She was born January 4, 1960 in Royal Oak and lived in Fort Gratiot for the past 10 years.
She was a special education graduate. Dorris enjoyed cartoons, baseball, and a good cup of coffee. Mostly she loved helping others, especially her friends at Lake Huron Woods, and the A.R.C. of St. Clair County. The family would like to thank Dr. Jude Stratford for the loving care he gave to Dorris.
She is survived by her mother, Carol Tobin, her father, Gordon Tangney, 2 siblings, Joseph Tangney and Yvonne Boone, several aunts,uncles, nieces and nephews, and her special friend, Mike Schafran. She was preceded in death by her sister, Laura Wickman, brother-in-law, Brian Boone, and her step-father, Dick Tobin.

Arthur “Ben” Ellis, 79, of Clyde died Saturday, May 5, 2012 in Port Huron Hospital.
He was born July 8, 1932 in Springfield, Missouri to the late Marvin and Stella Ellis. He married the love of his life, Adele Lechman on June 1, 1974 in Creve Coeur, Missouri.
Ben worked for many years as a Psycho Therapist in Missouri. He also worked at Macy’s here in Port Huron for over seven years. He enjoyed Archeology and is credited with the discovery of petroglyphs on the banks of the Mississippi River near Pevely, Missouri. He also enjoyed photography, wood carving, and reading and had an extensive library.
Ben is survived by his wife, Adele; six step children, Eleanor (Tom) Berra, Bradley Lechman-Su, Paula Testa, Marian (Dr. Gary) Doss, Juliet (Hermann) Buettner and Stephen Lechman; 8 grandchildren, Lindsay, Will, and Maggie Doss, Taylor and Blake Testa, Alex Buettner, and Shen and Kai Lechman-Su; a sister, Mary Etta Garrett; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Arthur Ellis, RMS.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street, Port Huron, with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Fr. Brian Cokonougher will officiate.

Charles Anthony “Chuck” Rome, Sr., 53, of Emmett, died Thursday, May 3, 2012 in Port Huron Hospital.
He was born September 18, 1958 in Port Huron to the late Robert and Edith Rome. He married Anna Marie Poole on July 25, 1998 in Port Huron.
Chuck worked several years at McMorran Auditorium in maintenance. He enjoyed crafts, fishing and being with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; eight children, Robbie (Mary) Jones, Stuart (Cristy) Poole, Lisa K. and Heather Rome, Susan Rudy, Lisa A. (Robert) Keith, Ida Rome and Butch (Christine) Decker; 22 grandchildren; one great grandson; two sisters, Charlene (Dennis) Rachwal and DeeDee Rome; a brother, Jeffery Rome; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, Charlie Rome in 2009.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street, with visitation starting at 9:00 a.m.

Dorothea P. Krell, age 83 of Fort Gratiot Twp. died May 7, 2012 in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born January 14, 1929 to John and Ruth Gordon. She married her sweetheart, Clarence A. Krell on January 17, 1949. They lived in the Port Huron area until their retirement, and then moved to Punta Gorda, Florida. Clarence preceded her in death on July 12, 2005. Dorothea moved to Fort Gratiot in 2006.
She had worked for several years at JC Penney, and in years past she was a member of both Court Street Baptist Church and Ross Bible Church. She enjoyed quilting, playing games, gardening, traveling and visiting her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by 4 children, Dr. Ken (Alice) Krell, Sandra (Terry) Carriveau, Brenda (Rick) Laber, and Gordon (Dawn) Krell, 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, a brother, Bradford (Velma) Gordon, sister-in-law, Geraldine Gordon, brother-in-law, Jack Everett, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter-in-law, Pam Krell, a sister, Phyllis Everett, a brother Douglas Gordon, and her infant baby girl.
