On Wednesday, July 11, U.S. Border Patrol Agents from the Detroit Station rescued two boaters who were adrift in the Detroit River. At approximately 9:00 PM, agents were patrolling the Detroit River in the Border Patrol’s 25-foot SAFE boat when they observed a vessel that appeared to be in distress. The vessel, which turned out to be a 24-foot sailboat, was drifting toward the Detroit Yacht Club docks and the MacArthur Bridge connecting Belle Isle to downtown Detroit when it was spotted. The sailboat had suffered a complete loss of power and communications and the crew was unable to radio the Coast Guard for assistance. The quick response of the Border Patrol boat unit helped prevent possible tragedy on the water. Agent Michael Cox, Vessel Commander, and Agents James Louks and Benjamin Wolfe were able to capture the wayward sailboat before it ran aground. After notifying Coast Guard Station Belle Isle of the situation, the rescued boat and grateful crew was towed to the Grand Haven Marina in Detroit.  “Rescues like this are an example of the Border Patrol’s commitment to the safety of the local boating community, and border safety in general, as part of our daily operations,” said Ed Rutkowski, Patrol Agent in Charge of Detroit Station.
