The Better Business Bureau of West Michigan is advising customers who use automatic teller machines to look for “skimmer” devices designed to steal their banking information and money.  According to a news release on the bureau’s website,  in past few weeks, thieves have used the devices at ATMs in eastern Michigan to steal more than $500,000 from the bank accounts of unsuspecting customers.  Authorities say false card slots disguised to look like legitimate ATM equipment have been installed – these skimmer devices read card numbers and send the information to criminals wirelessly. They also use hidden cameras to watch as customers enter their personal identification numbers, then make duplicate cards and type in the stolen PIN numbers.  They advise customers to inspect ATMs, gas pumps and other credit card readers before using them. They also should hide the dial pad with one hand while typing a personal identification number and look for cameras mounted around the vicinity of the machine.  People who suspect they’ve been victimized should call their local police department immediately, then their banking institution’s 24-hour fraud hotline number.
