Tom Hayden, principal author of the Port Huron Statement, speaks to a standing-room-only crowd of more than 500 students, faculty and staff, and area residents Tuesday, Aug. 28, at St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron. Many audience members watched the presentation on video monitors in the lobby after the college’s Fine Arts Theatre filled to capacity. The visit marked the 50th anniversary of the Port Huron Statement, a political manifesto crafted in 1962 by the Students for a Democratic Society. The group, which Hayden co-founded, became a national leader in protesting various issues in the 1960s, including the Vietnam War and racial segregation. Hayden also visited several classes at SC4. His visit was made possible in part by financial support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs through the regranting agency Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens.
