Chain Reaction Crash Causes Two Deaths
October 16th, 2012
A multiple vehicle crash on eastbound I-94 Sunday morning has left two people dead. Chesterfield Township police and Michigan State Police responded to the accident around 2 a.m. Sunday morning just south of 23 Mile Road on eastbound I-94. Witnesses and evidence at the crash lead investigators to believe that a 41 year old of Columbus Township, initiated the chain reaction crash when he struck a portable direction arrow trailer at the beginning of a construction zone. A 43 year old woman, of Troy, is believed to have parked to the side of 23 Mile Road exit ramp. She then is reported to have walked to scene of the crash to help and was struck by one of the vehicles in the crashes that followed. The 41 year old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was transferred to McLaren Macomb Hospital where she was later pronounced dead from injuries sustained. Eastbound lanes of I-94 were closed for eight hours and traffic diverted to the 21 Mile Road exit. The accident is still under investigation. Drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to have been a factor pending toxicology results.
