November 15th, 2012
The Mercy Women’s Health Center at St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy). These designations are specified by a Gold Seal of Approval. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that St. Joseph’s facility has achieved the highest practice standards for image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs,” explains Daniel Shogren, DO, Radiologist, with X-Ray Associates of Port Huron, and Chief of Radiology at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. The American College of Radiology (ACR) is a national professional organization that services more than 34,000 physicians and medical professionals with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive service. ”This designation means that patients seeking breast cancer screening and diagnostic services through the Mercy Women’s Health Center at either St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Port Huron; or Mercy Health Center in Fort Gratiot Township, can be assured that the facility meets the highest level of patient safety standards and image quality,” continues Dr. Shogren. “This ACR Gold Seal of Approval, coupled with the fact the Mercy Women’s Health Center provides the most advanced digital mammography services in the entire Blue Water Area and Thumb Region, offers our patients peace of mind in knowing that they are receiving unparalleled service by the most compassionate and highly trained staff.” ”With the recent news coverage about radiation dosage, patients have expressed concern about radiation dose safety, and are seeking Centers of Excellence facilities,” comments Amy Mallory, RT(R)(M), Lead Radiology Technologist, Mercy Women’s Health Center. “St. Joseph Mercy’s Gold Seal of Approval means the facility has undergone a rigorous review process and meets nationally accepted standards of care; that all personnel are expertly qualified to perform the procedure and interpret the medical images; and that our equipment is assessed by a medical imaging professional who verified that it functions properly, takes optimal images and utilizes appropriate radiation dose levels.” For more information about the Mercy Women’s Health Center, the Mercy Regional Cancer Center or Breast Cancer Awareness programs and services, call 1-888-MERCYME 1(888) 637-2963, or visit St. Joseph Mercy online at: mymercy.us and go to the Cancer Center section.
