Port Huron Hospital Expanding LAP-BAND Center Of Michigan
December 7th, 2011
Port Huron Hospital will be expanding its LAP-BANDR Center of Michigan to include gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgeries in addition to the gastric banding surgery it offered for nearly ten years. Port Huron Hospital was the first hospital in Michigan to have a bariatric center dedicated solely to adjustable gastric banding (lap band) weight loss surgery and patients — the LAP-BANDR Center of Michigan. With nearly 3,000 surgeries performed, the hospital’s staff and the independent surgeons on its medical staff are among the most experienced in Michigan and the Midwest. During adjustable gastric banding surgery, an adjustable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch where food collects, giving the patient a feeling of fullness. During gastric sleeve surgery, the surgeon removes about 85 percent of the stomach so that it takes the shape of a tube or sleeve. During gastric bypass surgery, a small stomach pouch is created to curb food intake by stapling a portion of the stomach. Information about Port Huron Hospital’s bariatric services is available from HealthAccess, 800.228.1484, or from the hospital’s website, www.porthuronhospital.org.
