Bob Wiley, St. Clair County drain commissioner, said work on the Gossman Drain in Fort Gratiot and its branches should begin in February and is expected to be complete by fall 2012.  The $1.9 million project is needed since the drain’s culverts are near failing and banks also are eroded.  Several culverts crossing Parker and State roads have exceeded their life expectancy. Some are more than 40 years old.  Leaves, grass clippings, tree limbs and debris have clogged the drain, causing flooding on State Road south of Krafft Road in Fort Gratiot as well as at the Old Farms subdivision on North River Road between State and Campbell roads. Residents living in the Gossman Drain district, the county at large and Fort Gratiot at large will be assessed for the repairs to the drain.  St. Clair County commissioners recently approved pledging the county’s full faith and credit for the acquisition of the bonds for the $1.9 million project.
