Skepticism in the City
March 5th, 2012

Why so much skepticism in the greater Port Huron community? Recently I was chatting with a friend of mine from the community college. He is a smart guy and I trust his judgment. Our conversation soon drifted to the high level of skepticism that seems to cast a shadow over just about any local development proposal. While he thought it might be just a small but vocal group, I’m not so sure. What we did agree on, was that until one of the major projects on the drawing board actually materializes, the skepticism will likely continue to grow. Our community leaders may be thinking that by rolling out idea after idea, the public will be encouraged that something is happening. In reality, so many ideas have been rolled out over the years that never materialized, that it has instead caused an ever increasing level of skepticism. Remember some of the big ideas that over the last decade have been sold to the public as done or nearly done deals: a huge hockey complex on Range Road, Terra Land, a half billion dollar casino project, a spectacular Vantage Point development, an aquarium, a 12 million dollar Sperry’s building restoration, now a new convention center, plus, many smaller initiatives that have long sense been forgotten. Someone once said, “Under promise and over deliver!” Or, to quote a famous marketing slogan, “Just Do It.”
