In a news release, Michigan Department of Transportation officials say construction will begin on new passenger inspection booths at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron in early April.  The new booths, they say,  ease congestion until the expanded plaza is constructed and there is additional capacity.  Three “stacked” booths will be constructed in lanes 10, 11 and 12 during the first phase of the project, beginning April 9. The lanes will be closed during construction and motorists headed into the United States will experience delays.  This construction is expected to be complete by Memorial Day weekend.  Construction of three staggered booths in lane 13 will begin in late May. The lane will be closed during construction of the booths. Work on this phase is expected to be completed by the end of June. Officials say, there may be intermittent single-lane closures during off-peak times — Monday through Thursday — for paving.  In April 2011 after testifying before Congresswoman Candice Miller’s Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, Stan Korosec, Vice President, Operations, Blue Water Bridge Canada, outlined the Blue Water Bridge Authorities’ proposal to maximize capacity at the bridge using staggered and stacked booths as an interim solution until the Blue Water Bridge Plaza can be constructed.  Miller then continued her advocacy to alleviate the congestion at the plaza with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to assist with and move forward these extra inspection booths at the plaza.
