Cemetery Clean Sweep
April 5th, 2012

Once out of office, most former mayors slip quietly into the night, rarely to be heard from again.  There are a couple of notable exceptions in our community.  Former mayor Jim Relken is a notable exception.  Jim served as Port Huron’s mayor from 1983-85, 85-87 and 93-95.  He declined the mayor’s position a 4th time in 1995 even though he was the top-vote getter.   Jim loves the city of Port Huron, and as a former mayor, has continued to serve in the non-profit community. Jim told me that real leadership is all about volunteering.  He certainly practices what he preaches.  Jim’s latest project is organizing the First Annual Port Huron Cemeteries Clean Sweep, with a goal to have hundreds of volunteers participate on May 5th and 6th.  You can learn all the details at www.CemeteryCleanSweep.com.  As Jim said, there is no better way to honor our community heritage!
