Bone Marrow Registration In Honor of Shawn Burr
April 24th, 2012
St. Clair County Community College will sponsor a bone marrow donor registration drive Wednesday, April 25, in honor of former Detroit Red Wing and St. Clair County resident Shawn Burr. The drive will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Memorial Room of SC4’s Clara E. Mackenzie Building, corner of Erie Street and McMorran Boulevard, Port Huron. Burr was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in 2011. Like many others dealing with a blood cancer diagnosis, he now finds himself in need of a bone marrow transplant.Burr is not alone. Every year, thousands of people of all ages are diagnosed with blood cancers such as leukemia or lymphoma. All it takes to sign up as a bone marrow donor is a few minutes and a cheek swab. When you register, you can be found as a donor match for any patient in need of a bone marrow transplant. Every day, thousands of patients search for a bone marrow donor match. Only four out of 10 patients are lucky enough to receive a transplant. To register, you must be between ages 18 and 55 and in good general health. The drive is being coordinated by the Michigan Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in cooperation with DKMS Americas. For more information about the drive, visit www.sc4.edu/donordrive or call (810) 989-5767.
