A meeting of several business owners, city of Port Huron and State officials and the Michigan Department of Transportation brought about a solution to the construction problem that has been looming.  Concerns by business owners arose when the city of Port Huron announced it would be closing Water Street for the summer from city limits to 13^th Street beginning this month for its resurfacing and water main project; a project that had been delayed at MDOT’s request.  This would shut off entry at both ends of Water Street to some 30 businesses.   A new detour route for westbound traffic on Interstate 94/I-69 to access Water Street was presented.  The detour is about 1.6 miles and should be open by Memorial Day…increased signage will mark the route and the Water Street closure will be delayed until the detour is open. Crews will construct a temporary exit ramp from the westbound lanes to the Lapeer connector which overpasses the interstate. The detour will then lead traffic south on the Lapeer connector to a turnaround point near Campau Avenue. Traffic will then follow the connector back north to merge with local eastbound traffic on the exit from the freeway to Water Street.
