It is over…a nearly six-year-old lawsuit against Port Huron Area School District has come to an approximate $300,000 end.  According to Board Chairman Jeff Stout, it was the district’s insurance company advising the settlement.  Stout maintains the district and school employees had all components in place and acted accordingly during the incidents which the plaintiffs say their children did not receive equal education opportunities due to racial harassment, and   that Port Huron Northern High School and officials acted with “deliberate indifference”.  In January the U.S. court of Appeals for the Sixty Circuit dismissed the claims against former Superintendent Michael Jones, former Northern Principal Craig Dahlke, and the board members of that year.  It should be noted that 80% of the settlement funds will be paid to the Plaintiff’s attorneys, and 100% of the settlement agreement is covered by insurance, with the District having no input regarding the financial settlement.
