Huron Lightship Re-opened
May 4th, 2012
After a long mild winter lay-over the Huron Lightship is now prepared for the seasonal re opening, Friday, May 4, as the flagship of the Port Huron Museum. The Huron Lightship was the last operating lightship on the Great Lakes, and served for over 50 years until being retired in 1970. For 36 of those years, she was stationed at Corsica Shoals, a sandy area 6 miles north of Port Huron. The Huron sustained an operating crew of 8 to 10 who worked a rotating schedule of seven days on and four days off. The Huron was dedicated in 1990 as a National Historic Landmark. At this time, the Huron contains displays of an extensive collection of artifacts, including many model ships, as well as a live camera feed of the bottom of the river, taken off a camera positioned in the bow.
