Polls Are Open Today

Today voters head to the polls to consider a tax renewal in Port Huron and Fort Gratiot for a four-year millage for the Blue Water Area Transit services which expires in both municipalities this year. The ballot question for Port Huron and Fort Gratiot elections asks voters to consider renewing the four-year tax that would expire in 2016.  The tax is expected to raise $420,000 in Port Huron and $269,000 in Fort Gratiot its first year.  The Blue Water Area Transportation Commission runs Blue Water Area Transit in the county.  The transit authority’s total operating budget is about $12 million.  Burtchville and Port Huron townships along with Marysville pays into the bus service.  Ridership has more than doubled in both Port Huron and Fort Gratiot in the last four years.  Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday in both municipalities.   Memphis Community Schools is seeking approval of a $950,000 bond to pay for three buses and technology — Marysville Community Schools is seeking the renewal of 18-mill non-homestead property tax.
