National Letter Carrier Association Looks To Hit 1,000,000 Pounds Of Food
May 14th, 2012
Saturday marked the 19th year of the National Letter Carrier Association’s annual food drive. Organizer of the drive, Michelle Young said the group has collected 80,000 pounds of food the last two years, and their goal was to reach that same amount, which would put their total amount of food collect in the 19 years at over 1 million pounds. Over the past few week, residents have been notified through their mailboxes, as well as through here at WGRT, about Saturday’s food drive. They were asked to place non-perishable food items by their mailbox for letter carriers and volunteers to pick up. Volunteers included the Port Huron Young marines, Port Huron Northern High School baseball team, and Kroger employees. Once collected, the food was dropped off at the Blue Water Community Food Depot. The food will remain local, distributed to local food banks.
